OUR MISSION: To promote the prevention of cruelty to animals that are neglected, abused, exploited, stray or homeless. To work within the law and in cooperation with the government, OSPCA and the public, in order to improve conditions for animals while maintaining a balanced sensitivity toward both animal and human needs.
 

OUR HISTORY: In the early 1970’s, the Quinte Humane Society acquired Eastern Breeders' property at 527 Avonlough Road to utilize as a public animal shelter. Prior to this, many animals were placed with Quinte Humane Society volunteers who provided foster homes and animal care. Over the decades, we have moved to a professional environment employing Animal Care Attendants with post-secondary training, supported by a skilled management team and governed by a Board of Directors who bring their expertise and experience to #teamQHS.

Since 1993 we have been affiliated with the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (OSPCA), but remain a locally run, locally funded shelter with all funds raised remaining in our region.

OUR ORGANIZATION: The Quinte Humane Society is a provincially incorporated non-profit and federally registered charity and serves all of Hastings and Prince Edward Counties. Our community based shelter provides a safe and caring place for as many as 2,200 sick, abused, neglected and homeless animals each year.

The Quinte Humane Society is not a government agency funded neither by the province or at the federal level. The gap between the cost of care for each animal and the adoption fee charged is typically hundreds of dollars (approximately $345 for cats and $185 for dogs). This challenging gap is only met by your donations, sponsorships, fundraising events,  earned revenues, adoption fees and fees for service.

OUR COMMUNITY SERVICES: Our Pound services with many municipalities through the region, provide care and comfort for strays and owned animals roaming at large. Animal Control brings them to the shelter and we look after them with the hope that their owner will claim them. After 5 days, they become our responsibility and ownership and we make all the necessary efforts - medications, spay/neuters, microchips, grooming, surgeries, cuddles - to get them ready for adoption to their new 'Forever Home'.
