Tune into CJBQ 800 AM to listen live on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 11:25 AM for Featured Pets and other great information about QHS proudly sponsored by CJBQ, the station that cares about community!
Sam is a 3-year-old German Shepard mix that came into our care through animal control and was not claimed. He hasn’t had the easiest beginning in life which has caused him to be a bit shy. He takes a while to get comfortable in new settings and around new people and his new family will need to be patient with him.
Sam is an independent boy who likes to do his own thing but does accept affection and being pet once he gets used to people. He is looking to find his person; someone he can form a strong bond with. He hopes his new family likes lounging out on the couch and will either allow him to join them or will give him a nice comfy, cozy bed for him to enjoy.
Treats are a favourite of Sam’s. He is extremely food motivated and there isn’t a treat that he doesn’t enjoy. He does know how to sit and staff have been working on teaching him to fetch. With his love of treats, he should be able to learn other commands using them as rewards.
Being outside is the highlight of Sam’s day! He loves the outdoors and his ideal home would have lots of time for walks or a farm property where he can enjoy lots of time outside helping with chores. Sam does pull when he starts his walk and when he sees squirrels or other small animals. Once he has settled into walking, he walks great. He has become a favourite amongst our volunteer dog walkers.
Due to his size and what we have seen of his behaviour, we are recommending that Sam goes to a home where he is the only animal. He does not do well with cats or small animals. He does like other dogs and has lived with another dog in the past, but we are unsure how he may be with a dog in the home. If there is a dog in the home or one that frequently visits a meet and greet will be necessary. But we think he would do better as the only dog with some dog friends he could meet up with for walks or playdates. Children are another no for Sam. We do not know his previous exposure to tiny humans, but he is large so ideally, his home would be adults (or teenagers) only.
If you have the time, love and patience to work with Sam, we know you will have yourself a fantastic best friend!
