Plans for the new Animal Care and Adoption Centre
The Humane Society Hastings Prince Edward (HSHPE) unveiled plans for its new Animal Care and Adoption Centre and launched the “It Takes Heart” Capital Campaign on June 8 in a Zoom and Facebook Live event.
The Animal Care and Adoption Centre will be built at 34 Wallbridge Loyalist Road, on a 6.3 acre lot purchased by HSHPE in 2015. The Centre, as well as a Community Mobile Clinic, make up Phase 1 of a larger project which will see the addition of a Community and Education Centre and an on-site veterinary clinic to the building. Anticipated cost of Phase 1 of the project is $5 million, with $3.1 million already raised and $2 million outstanding.
“The need for a new building is urgent,” said Marilyn Lawrie, HSHPE Executive Director. “Deteriorating conditions at our current site mean that we need to move to protect the health and safety of the animals in our care and our volunteers and staff.”
Chair of the Capital Campaign Committee, Greg Sudds, said the “It Takes Heart Campaign” seeks to raise the $2 million over the next 12 months. “This is a generous community. I know how much we all value and rely on the services of the Humane Society, and I know there are many people who will want to step up to help.” He adds that the committee members are actively seeking support from the provincial and federal governments.
“We are extremely grateful to the municipalities, foundations and individuals who have already stepped forward to support the new Centre. We look forward to recognizing and celebrating their generosity as we move forward with the Campaign,” said Jean-Charles D’Amours, HSHPE Capital Campaign Manager.
In addition to individual donations, Phase 1 of the project has received funding from the Cities of Belleville and Quinte West, several corporations and private foundations, including the John M and Bernice Parrott Foundation and the Municipality of Marmora and Lake.
Loan guarantees provided by the Cities of Belleville and Quinte West mean that the building can begin soon. HSHPE and its builder, Task Force Engineering Inc., plan to break ground in the next several weeks.
